The Allard Pierson develops courses for professionals aiming to specialise in working with heritage collections. These courses are designed to provide depth for curators, collection specialists and cataloguers who want to move forward in the field of book history, but also for researchers who require this specialism for their projects.
For the book history courses, there are two entry levels (beginner or advanced); the Jewish Heritage Seminar is especially designed for students and young professionals.
Book history courses
The annual Summer School History of the Book offers book history courses at beginner and advanced levels, with a strong emphasis on material bibliography. This specialism comprises the study of the material aspects of books printed before 1800, such as typography, book bindings and user marks. These intensive, English-language and usually three-day courses are tailored to those who want to distinguish themselves in the heritage sector with a focus on book history or those who need a good basis for book-historical research. They are ideally suited for library and antiquarian staff, young professionals, Master’s /PhD students and postdoc researchers.
The Summer School takes place in the last week of August and the first week of September. These are the courses that were organised in 2024 (in Dutch). Information on the 2025 courses will be published in March.

Amsterdam Symposium on the History of Food
The Amsterdam Symposium on the History of Food is the biannual international point of assembly and an exchange of knowledge in the field of the food history in the Netherlands. It intends to stimulate debate and research that bridges the gap between different disciplines. Another aim is to transfer academic research to a wider public and stimulate research using the collections of the University of Amsterdam. The symposium is therefore targeted at both an academic and a professional audience. This years' symposium will take place on 5-6 June 2025. The symposium is organised by Katell Lavéant, Manpreet Janeja, Amber Striekwold, Maarten Kuiper, Merit Hondelink, Jon Verriet and Lisa Haushofer.
Jewish Heritage Seminar
The international Jewish Heritage Seminar has been organised every other year since 2019 and is a collaboration between the Rothschild Foundation Hanadiv Europe and the Allard Pierson’s Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana. Fifteen young professionals and Master’s / PhD students from Europe attend a week-long intensive seminar reflecting on Jewish heritage. The programme includes academic presentations, hands-on workshops, case studies and site visits to such institutions as the Jewish Museum, the Ets Haim Livraria Montezinos library and various monuments and buildings in Amsterdam.
The next edition will take place in August 2025. Registration for the seminar is through an application process and selection.
