For adults

The Allard Pierson runs a range of activities themed around the collections for interested parties. Check the calendar to see what’s on. The following courses and events are offered every year.

Summer School on the History of the Book

Each year we present a series of workshops on the history of the book. The Summer School on the History of the Book takes place in the last week of August and the first week of September. The workshops are suitable for researchers, students, librarians, museum staff and all other lovers of books and manuscripts, libraries and antiquarian bookshops, printing techniques and typography.

See the 2024 Summer School programme here (in Dutch).

Historical Cartography at a Glance

The Historische Cartografie in Vogelvlucht course is organised in the autumn by Explokart members in collaboration with the Allard Pierson. Different aspects of historical cartography will be covered during several afternoons. Participants will learn about 16th-century cartographers, the techniques used to make maps and the context in which this took place. They will also learn about the mapping of the Netherlands through the ages, the history of the atlas and the mapping of Amsterdam.

Talks

The Allard Pierson organises talks and presentations for a broadly interested audience at various times of the year. Annual activities include the Week of the Classics in spring and the Science Weekend in autumn. Also on offer are annual themed talks like the Frederik Muller Lecture and the Circus Lecture. Admission to these talks and presentations is usually free.

Check the calendar of events for all activities.
