Crowdfunding; Help us to restore the Hortus Medicus!

The Allard Pierson Museum is launching a crowdfunding campaign to restore the Hortus Medicus, which was located in the courtyard garden in the seventeenth century. Will you help to bring greenery back to this spot in Amsterdam's city center?

The Allard Pierson has a unique opportunity to make the highlights of its collection even more visible by creating the Hortus Medicus in the courtyard of the Allard Pierson, in the heart of the University Quarter. This medicinal historical garden was located in or near our courtyard in the 17th century. It was a medicinal garden where doctors and pharmacists studied herbs and plants and taught about their medicinal uses.

The Hortus Medicus is a unique heritage site and one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, with a rich history dating back to 1638. Herbs and plants were and still are of vital importance. They serve as raw materials, food, seasonings, or medicinal remedies, among other things. Herbs and plants not only have bright colors and scents, but also have special properties and come from different parts of the world.

The Allard Pierson has the ambition to bring the Hortus Medicus back to our historic location. With this green educational meeting place, we are strengthening the connections with our beautiful heritage collections, such as the gastronomic collections, the book collection of the Hortus Botanicus, the medical collection, and the unique depiction of the Hortus plants, the Moninckx Atlas (1709). At the same time, we also want to use the Hortus Medicus to connect local residents, museum visitors, entrepreneurs, researchers, and students.

With your contribution, we can create a green oasis of biodiversity, tranquility, and inspiration in the heart of Amsterdam. A meeting place where everyone can learn about the historical stories of the plants and the location. A place to enjoy the greenery, relive history, and help shape the future.
