  • Funding and support

    • Funding of €1,500 per month, for one to three months. International fellows will additionally have their travel expenses to the Netherlands reimbursed to a maximum of €1,000.

    • Support by the responsible curator at the Allard Pierson.

    • Introduction to the relevant departments of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) if required.

    • Workspace at the Allard Pierson during office hours.

    • UvA library card.

    • Taking part in weekly staff lunches and in staff events.

    Requirements

    • Attendance at the Allard Pierson for at least three days a week.
    • Fellowships are carried out for a continuous period in 2026, with the precise period to be agreed upon.
    • Brief presentation of the research project for the Allard Pierson staff.
    • Acknowledging the Allard Pierson in publications arising from the fellowship and providing a copy of these publications.
    • Writing a blog post for the Allard Pierson’s website.
    • Presenting a lecture for stakeholders, if required.
    • The fellowships are open to all candidates with a Master's degree and demonstrable academic abilities. A completed PhD is not a requirement.
    • It is the fellows’ responsibility to find accommodation and cover all costs of the research residency, using the funds awarded. Applicants should be aware that the costs of accommodation in Amsterdam may exceed the awarded funds.
    •  It is the fellows’ responsibility to arrange a visa (if necessary) for the duration of the fellowship.
       

    How to apply

    Applications can be made online. The application should include: 

    •  research proposal of max. 800 words including:
      o    the relation between the proposed research and the Allard Pierson collection
      o    a list of source material to be consulted (including shelf marks)
      o    possible output of the research
    • A CV, including a list of relevant publications
    • The names and contact details of two academic referees who support the application, including their current position, email address, and phone number 
       

    Selection process

    The closing date for the 2026 fellowships programme is 1 October 2025. All applicants will be notified before 15 November 2025 at the latest. The selection committee comprises the head of Knowledge & Collections, the fellowship programme coordinator and the responsible curator. Only applications of sufficient quality and relevance are eligible.
