The Allard Pierson Studio always features a small exhibition on a topic from our music collections. In collaboration with the Dutch Jazz Archive, the Allard Pierson now presents: Milly Scott, a forgotten treasure of Dutch Jazz. Come listen to the recordings in the Studio, the free-access space next to the Espresso Bar.
Milly Scott, born Marion Henriƫtte Louise Molly in 1933 in Den Helder, was the first Black jazz singer in the Netherlands but never received the recognition she deserved. In the 1950s and 1960s, Milly Scott became a popular singer. She recorded nineteen singles, mainly Dutch-language covers of American and British hits. As the only Black artist of her time, she held a unique yet challenging position in the industry. Although she never became the international star she could have been, she remains an important part of Dutch jazz history. Her diversity and talent are unique, and her story highlights the difficult position of Black artists during that era.
Be sure to visit the Allard Pierson studio, listen to her songs, and discover why Milly Scott ranks among the top Dutch jazz vocalists.
