The second APPEAR conference, hosted by the Allard Pierson in Amsterdam and co-organized by the J. Paul Getty Museum (JPGM) Antiquities Conservation Department is scheduled for October 19-21, 2022. Four years after the first APPEAR event held in Los Angeles (May 2018) this second conference aims to build on the continued research of ancient panel paintings from Roman Egypt (mummy portraits). APPEAR was launched in 2013 by the JPGM as a collaborative initiative focused on the study of ancient panel paintings. Currently with 50 international partner institutions, the project’s mission is to investigate, corroborate and share data, broadening our understanding of ancient painting technology, its production, materials, history, and artistic practice. The knowledge gained from the study of these well-preserved ancient paintings is far-reaching.

Seventeen presentations by APPEAR project participants are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday October 19-20 at the Allard Pierson. The papers delivered by specialists in the field (conservators, scientists, curators, and scholars of Roman Egypt) will highlight the technical investigations, observations and data collected to date.
