The art of transformation

On stage, nothing is quite what it seems. Roles, masks, costumes and sets can amplify, refine or hide identities. The Allard Pierson Theatre Collection contains a wealth of materials, ranging from costumes and photographs to audio recordings and set designs.
The Art of Transformation focuses on three distinct subjects: crossdressing, the Slingelandt theatre and the life of revue performer Louisette. These histories also inspire contemporary makers. Photographer Diana Blok captures actors on film dressed in their dream roles of the opposite sex. Artist Arne Hendriks explores the deeper significance of the set changes of the Slingelandt theatre, and creative producer Danny van Zuijlen writes a book about the transformation of revue performer Louisette.
The exhibition links historical theatre practices with contemporary research into visibility and (self) expression. Visitors are invited to look on as researchers. What transformations do you see? How would you like to present yourself on stage? What do you choose to reveal, and what remains hidden?
